One of the things that I talk to my clients about is the importance of having a plan for their life. Planning is one of the most important things that we can do to ascertain our long and short term financial goals. We have to be careful not to allow ourselves to just drift through life. Drifting is the equivalent to having a boat in the ocean with no captain or crew. It will be carried by nothing but the wind and current with no true destination and in many times can crash on the shore and be disastrous. It is the same way for our life.
We all talk about how we are so busy that we donít have time to plan for our life because we are too busy living it. However, we will spend two weeks planning for a one week vacation, or spend months planning for a wedding that is over in a short few hours.

I have always found that we spend time doing the things that are important to us. We can always find our priorities by where we spend our time and money. In my opinion we canít afford not to take the time to make a plan or our life, especially in the area of finances. One of the best ways to start a plan is to meet with an advisor to help you look over your current situation and to have in depth conversations about where you want to go.
In the planning process there should be discussions about debt liquidation, budgeting, wills, living wills, and power of attorneys as well as saving and investing for special purposes and retirement.
I have found all too often in my industry that many advisors are only interested in the areas of your life where they can make money themselves, which leave many areas uncovered without a plan for you. Planning is more than just about investing money. It has to do with leaving a legacy behind for your family instead of a mess for them to figure out, and sometimes to clean up.
